Theater is a complex metaphor in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's films. His characters exist through speech, inventing and renewing themselves through their dialogue as they persuade, charm, seduce, comment on themselves, or aspire to lucidity. This dialogue invariably leads to an exploration of the past. In Mankiewicz's films, the past is alive with possibilities and indeterminacies, and alternate routes seem to remain open. Mankiewicz constructs a cinema of options and inventions, creating a definition of the "film in the process of making itself" (Godard).

ジョゼフ・L・マンキーウィッツの映画において、演劇は複雑性を帯びたメタファーとなる。彼の登場人物は言葉を発することによってこそ存在し、対話を通してお互いを説得し、魅了し、誘惑し、あるいはお互いを批評し、明晰さを希望することでこそ自分自身を再発明し、進化していくのだ。この対話は必然的に過去の探求へと進んでいく。マンキーウィッツの映画では、過去は可能性と未決定さに満ちあふれた時間として生きていて、異なった道程というものが未だに開かれているようにも見える。マンキーウィッツは選択と刷新の映画を構築し、「それ自体が作られていく過程にある映画」（ゴダール）という新たな定義を創造するのだ。
