39. King Vidor
Chris Fujiwara

King Vidor’s cinema charts the movement of human energy in search of sites of resistance and conflict. In Show People, Vidor’s extraordinary reflection on his own chosen art form and its place in American society, the site of conflict is the film frame itself, which the heroine (an ebullient Marion Davies) constantly seeks to dominate with her personality and creativity. Her varying degrees of success at doing this provide the basis for a hilarious comedy that is also a brilliant analysis of comedy.
